Storyline, Hótel Djúpavík, Iceland, 2005

Combination of very different materials in the same piece has always interested me soft/ hard /maskulin/ feminine/etc.

Objects used in all my works from the category Storyline are usually picked up or found in my nearest environment in Iceland or accidentally on my travels around the country.

Objects and Roles

''I often look back. I do so because I like to have firm ground under my feet, to know and try to understand where I come from, why and how the background is the

way it is, and to see how time affects people’s life and work. That sounds like a security council for a united past, present and future.''

With these words Þórdís Alda reveals much about the attitude behind her work. In her quest for material, Þórdís collects functional

objects from her environment, both those that have become one with the landscape and personal objects gathered from her contemporaries. All these items are superfluous – they have been abandoned but they’re still spread about our environment. They raise questions about our growing consumer culture and the evidence of it that becomes more and more noticeable as time goes on. Looking ahead, we realise that the pace of consumption will only increase, as witnessed by the events of today.
